About Arts in the Park

The 2018 Arts in the Park season is happening May 22nd to August 3rd! Founded in 1996 by Dereen Hildebrand and Steve Slade, Arts in the Park is a celebration of visual and performing arts that takes place every summer in downtown Whitehorse! Pack a lunch and head to LePage Park to enjoy a free show and visual art demonstration, Monday to Friday, noon to 1pm. Don’t miss out on our youth-oriented Wednesday evening shows that happen from 7 to 8pm.

All the Arts in the Park events are completely free of charge and everyone is welcome!

Sculpting with Harreson Tanner

June 18th, 2018|0 Comments

Harreson is working on a sculpture of legendary Yukoner, bush pilot to CEO Joe Sparling. Harreson encourages audience members ask questions about his subject matter & process and invites them to share stories of their experiences with community icon, Joe. During all the noon hour performances this week.

Harreson began his study of sculpture at the Ottawa School of Art 33 years ago. In 2000 this vocation became his full-time career. In 2002, Harreson and his wife made Whitehorse their home. In subsequent years he has helped create a cooperative art gallery, a private art gallery and has worked as business manager, curator and participating artist. For seven years he also was a member of a government funding body, the Yukon Arts Advisory Council. In 2008, for his work in the Territorial cultural sector, he was one of three finalists for Tourism Industry Association Canada.
Harreson works in clay and bronze, primarily producing portraits of historical figures, in the form of masks, and busts. A number of his works are public art pieces which include bronze busts of Jack London, Father William Judge, Pierre Berton, Ted Harrison and soon-to-be-installed Martha Black. The bronze faces of Annie and Joe Henry are installed on the Dempster Highway.
Harreson researches his subjects, and works primarily from photographs. He says of his work “It is intuitive and interpretive. I feel that I am releasing images from their course clay bonds.
